Barbell exercises can be performed with relatively cheap equipment. One set of weights will allow you to perform a wide range of exercises.
Unlike exercises performed using purpose built gym equipment, many stabilising muscles are involved. This can be an advantage when a more balanced physique is required or a disadvantage when trying to isolate a specific muscle group.
Maximum gains are achieved when the posture is controlled and the stabilising parts of the body kept still throughout the movement.
